The Handlers did a little shopping when they took their kids to Europe in 1956. And in the window of a Men's Shop posed an image of a sex toy that you see. The doll was a gag gift and a Men's sexy novelty toy that stared in a racy comic strip in the Germany newspaper Bild Zeitung. The doll... the Bild-Lilli doll. Ruth went in and bought 2. One for her daughter and one for the team back home in America. And from her prototype Barbie was born...

Before Mattel bought the rights to what we know as Barbie in 1964, Barbie was Bild Lilli.

Past - Barbie began as Lilli. Or, Lilli inspired Barbie. How ever you look at it, American Barbie has a secret past in Germany as the Bild-Lilli Doll . First Lilli was a comic, a pin-up girl, drawn by cartoonist, Reinhard Beuthien for the newspaper tabloid, Bild-Zeitung in Hamburg Germany. (Taylor, D. 2012)

Bill Lilli, the German mother of Barbie - Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel Inc. and was launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.

Lilli Cartoon -- inspiration for Lilli doll and then Barbie... In 1952,  Lilli appeared in the German newspaper Bild-Zeitung. The comic was created by Reinhard Beuthien. Lilli was a gorgeous, saucy, buxom blonde who often played 'cat and mouse' games with her many admirers.
